What are some well-known hoaxes that have been circulating on the internet lately and really make you angry?
One thing I cannot stand is the manipulation of naturalistic-scientific material to write any hoax. This one in particular makes its way into people's hearts because, according to them, the weaker individuals are in front, and the stronger ones behind. To be precise, the caption of the hoax is usually this: • The 3 wolves in front are old & sick, they walk in front to set the pace of the running group lest they get left behind. • The next 5 wolves are the strongest & best, they are tasked to protect the front side if there is an attack. • The pack in the middle are always protected from any attack. • The 5 behind them are also among the strongest & best; they are tasked to protect the back side if there is an attack. • The last one is the LEADER. He ensures that no one is left behind. He keeps the pack unified and on the same path. He is always ready to run in any direction to protect & serves as the 'bodyguard' to the entire group Let’s start from the beginning. This photo was taken in 2011 by Chadden Hunter at Wood Buffalo National Park, for a BBC series called Frozen Planet. Basically, the wolves (25 in this case) travel over the very deep snowpack in a line, to save some energy. The last individual does not stand guard over the group, but cuts across the path to 'save' some road, and energy accordingly. He simply falls behind for various reasons. It would have no logical explanation in a herd of animals to place the weakest, or elders, in the front line to lead the herd. Logically, with deep snow, there would be a greater expenditure of energy if there were 'weak' individuals in the front line. It is not only us humans who get bogged down in the snow, especially if we are injured or have physical difficulties. The point is: let us stop humanising nature. By this I am not saying that the wolf does not exhibit complex sociality, like the vast majority of canids. I am simply saying that the event described is not real, and serves the sole purpose of justifying human events that have nothing to do with the animal world. Perhaps the original creator of this hoax thought it was a good idea to create a bogus caption for the sole purpose of pitying us humans, trying to show that animals also take care of their loved ones. And this really does happen in nature, where in many groups of canids they take care of sick individuals, even if they are sick from birth (and there is fossil evidence that dates this behaviour to at least about 1.8 M.a). But why create such a hoax? This I do not understand. If everyone starts to have their say, every picture is interpretable and consequently every natural event would have a subjective explanation. Nature is studied through scientific methodologies, but this apparently does not matter on the internet.
